A market-leading CCTV solutions provider approached Impulse Embedded to help develop a number of hardware platforms for their central data storage servers. As these servers operated 24/7 and needed to handle a large amount of data, the solution needed to be robust enough to withstand the conditions in a wide variety of control room environments.
The specifications provided by the customer included a 4U ATX/mATX motherboard rack-mount system to provide up to 10x hot-swap 3.5” hard drive bays, and also a short depth 4U MicroATX motherboard rack-mount system to provide up to 5x internal 3.5” hard drive bays.
The main challenge our
Design To Order Service team faced when meeting this specification was physically fitting all the required parts into the specified depth of the rack cases. Along with the 3.5” storage requirement, we also needed to accommodate a 5.25” DVD drive, as well as an internal 2.5” SSD bay for the system drive.
Using CAD software we created two completely bespoke rack-mount solutions for the customer to fit all the required components in to the systems.
Careful consideration was made when it came to the layout of the systems, taking into account the heat dissipation of each component, along with the install process which was important to scale up the production of the systems.
The first samples of the product were supplied to confirm the fit and function for the application, followed by tooling being created for mass production.
We were able to supply the custom rack-mount cases as completely bespoke working systems. To support the customer, and overcome the MOQ levels of the rack-mount cases we worked with the customer on a scheduled call-off order over 12 months as part of our
Specialist Distribution Services.
