Our customer in the
Defence and Security sector manufacture UAV detection equipment to identify moving targets in remote locations prone to extreme high temperatures. High definition 4k video images from these UAV detection units are streamed back to base allowing data analysts to determine whether the targets would need to be neutralised.
The UAV detection equipment captures and transmits large volumes of images at high speeds, and this information is processed quickly in covert enclosures stationed in various locations before being transmitted back to base. The requirement for this project was for fanless, high powered, embedded processors to help manage the large amount of data being processed and, critically, they needed to be compact without compromising on power.
To handle the sheer amount of computing power required to handle the large volume of image processing, the customer wished to install as many boards as possible into a small rack system already encased in an existing compact enclosure. The smaller the boards, the more that could be installed, thus determining the level of computing power the system could provide.
Due to the nature of the application, longevity of supply was also a vital consideration for the choice of hardware as a considerable amount of engineering resource was required in the development of the system.
Impulse sourced a new, ultra-compact SBC from leading
manufacturing partner
Axiomtek, specialists in Industrial embedded solutions.
Due to the compactness of the product, the customer was able to install nine boards, easily facilitating the processing power required to handle the imagery, and due to the industrial roadmap the requirement for longevity of supply was also guaranteed.
To provide all important reliability in the harsh and unmanned locations, the product included an extremely efficient and robust cooling system meaning that the product was unaffected by the rapid fluctuation in temperatures of the existing enclosures.
