Life-Saving Knowledge: Highlights from our CPR and Defib Training

Last week, we took a significant step towards enhancing workplace safety by organising a CPR and defibrillator training workshop. Held in two sessions, this event was arranged to ensure that all participants received hands-on training and vital life-saving skills.

Our Accounts Supervisor, Annette Starkey, and Customer Support Advisor, Karen Williamson, spearheaded this initiative. Their dedication to promoting health and safety in the workplace ensured the smooth running of the workshop, from scheduling to hosting each of the sessions.

First, they demonstrated the best and most effective technique for giving an individual cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) in the event of a cardiac arrest.

After the demonstration, it was our turn. With guidance from Annette and Karen, each participant practised optimal CPR techniques.

After practising CPR, we learned about the proper use of defibrillators, which are crucial when responding to cardiac emergencies.

This allowed us to familiarise ourselves with defibrillator devices such as the one in our office, allowing everyone to gain confidence in their ability to perform these procedures effectively in an emergency.

Speaking about the workshop, Annette said:

“I volunteered to run the CPR workshop because I was hearing that more and more people were having cardiac arrests outside of the hospital and were only surviving because someone close by knew how to perform CPR. If CPR is started straight after a cardiac arrest, then they are 3 times more likely to survive than if they had just waited for the ambulance.

“I was surprised to learn that over 23 million adults did not know how to perform CPR, and when the British Heart Foundation ran a campaign to learn how to perform CPR in 15 minutes, this was the perfect tool to use to be able to offer the opportunity to my colleagues to learn how to perform CPR.

“I am so pleased that the workshops were a hit and we received excellent feedback. Hopefully, my colleagues took some useful tools away with them that could maybe, one day, help save a life. As my favourite saying goes...

“Anyone can perform CPR. Everyone can help save a life.”

The skills learned during these sessions are not only applicable within the workplace but are also valuable in everyday life.

As we move forward, we will continue to prioritise health and safety, ensuring our workplace is equipped to handle any emergency effectively.
